Stoney Heap

Planning permission was granted by Durham County Council in early 2006. Operations to recover some 257,000 tonnes of coal from this 49 hectare site began in the summer of 2006 and were completed in the autumn of 2007.

The restoration of the site includes the clearing of dereliction associated with the former Stoney Heap colliery site and provides for a new 26 hectare nature conservation area incorporating some 7 hectares of new woodland and a much improved public access. The scheme also provided significant funding towards the restoration of the Bantling Castle lime kilns project.
