Planning permission was granted for this 69 hectare site in early 2007 with operations commencing later in the year. The site provides for the recovery of one million tonnes of coal and 350,000 tonnes of high quality fireclay over a 4 year coaling period and follows on, from the cessation of the Maiden’s Hall extension operation which is due to finish at the end of 2007.
As part of the scheme, it is also proposed to remove the Widdrington Coal Disposal point. The restoration will provide for significant new woodlands, species rich hay meadows, water bodies and high quality arable agricultural land.
