Arkwright

Work on the mining project started in July 1993 as the solution to a problem of methane gas leaking from old ironstone workings into the homes of residents of the former Arkwright Village. Residents were rehoused in a “new village” of some 230 properties some 400 yards from their former homes. The £20m cost was met from proceeds from the recovery of over four million tonnes of coal which will be completed by the Spring of 2005.

Restoration work is due to be completed by the end of 2007.
