Photograph of Thoresby deep mine
With a history dating back to 1925 when two shafts were sunk 691m and 688m to the Top Hard seam by the Bolsover Colliery Company, Thoresby Colliery at Edwinstowe, Notts, has been one of the country's most consistent coal producers.
Linked underground with the neighbouring Welbeck Colliery, Thoresby is currently working the limited remaining reserves in the Parkgate seam before concentrating production in a new area of reserves in the Deep Soft seam some 830m below ground. These reserves are being accessed as part of a project costing over £50 million which will extend the life of the mine by about a decade.
Employing 500 people, Thoresby produces coal for the Midlands power stations it is strategically located to serve as well as industrial and domestic qualities.
Annual output for 2007 = 1.4 Million tonnes.
