Photograph of Thoresby deep mine
Thoresby colliery is located at Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, and dates back to 1925, when two shafts were sunk 691 metres and 688 metres below ground to the Top Hard seam by the Bolsover colliery Company. Linked underground with the neighbouring Welbeck colliery, the Group’s intention is for Thoresby to concentrate production in a new area of reserves in the Deep Soft seam at approximately 750 metres below ground.
Mining at the Parkgate seams at the Thoresby mine has suffered from poor mining conditions with the particular problem being interference from previous workings undertaken approximately 120 metres above the current mining area. However, increased preparatory work and mine replanning have allowed the Group to access the final face in the Parkgate seam, which is expected to be concluded by March 2010. Mining will then commence at the Deep Soft Seam which is being accessed as part of the investment programme costing approximately £55 million, which is expected to extend the life of the mine to 2017.
